Lincoln Navigator

The 2007 Lincoln Navigator joins the all-new Lincoln MKX crossover and the renamed MKZ sedan (known for 2006 as the Zephyr), but it eschews the alphanumeric and keeps its real name. A fussy set of grilles clumsily recalls Continentals and Marks of the 1960s, but the look doesn't work here. Even if you don't find the effect elegant, you certainly can't miss it, and that might be more important anyhow. Driving home the "more is more" theme are tons of chrome, a "powerdome" hood, and optional twenty-inch wheels. We'd be remiss if we didn't note that the new Escalade is available with 22-inchers.
Like the Ford Expedition on which it is based, the new Navigator gets a new frame and new four-wheel independent suspension, as well as an extended wheelbase version, dubbed the Navigator L. The longer version of the already massive 'Gator stretches the frame by 14.7 inches, adding an extra 25 cubic feet of cargo space.
To keep all that mass on the road, all 2007 Navigators will come with standard traction and stability control. In case the worst happens, Lincoln also has fitted its newest truck with three-row side curtain air bags to protect as many as eight passengers in the new cabin, which looks modern yet pays homage to Lincolns of yore. Real wood trim and square gauges look good, and if the new shapes and colors don't impress first-time riders, the 600-watt THX II audio system and optional eight-inch rear entertainment system definitely will.

mazda Nagare

mazda Nagare

Mazda Motor Corporation announced the global reveal of an all-new concept car, Mazda NagaRE (pronounced na-gah-reh), at the Greater Los Angeles International Auto Show. The press conference is scheduled at 4:05 PM on November 29, 2006. Last year, Mazda had a one-two-three punch with the Sassou, Senku, and Kabura concept cars. The Nagare is the first indication of Mazda's future design direction. Mazda is very tight lipped about this car, but be sure that RotaryNews.com will bring you coverage of this concept, and other items at the LA and Detroit Autoshows. From this little glimpse, it appears to be a continuation of the Senku from the 2005 Tokyo Autoshow. According to Mazda's newly appointed global design director, Laurens van den Acker, Nagare sums up the future of Mazda design in one deceptively simple word -Flow. "Nagare is a celebration of proportions and surface language that will evolve into subsequent designs planned for presentation at future international auto shows. Nagare examines light and shadow, and begins to reveal the global design cues for the next generation of Mazda vehicles."Franz Von Holzhausen, Director of Design for Mazda North American Operations, who headed the Nagare design team in Irvine, Calif., describes Nagare as an evolving expression of Zoom-Zoom: "Inspired by the movement of nature's elements, our designers have captured motion, energy and lightness, translating into a beautiful language of lines and forms that are powerful yet effortless, provocative yet strikingly seductive."And there's much more to come, too, as Mazda continues to evolve flow through future models. For now, Mazda enthusiasts can experience Nagare as an indication of Mazda Design's confident step in a new direction.Other vehicles on display at the Show include the recently launched Mazda CX-7 crossover SUV, the Mazda CX-9 three-row, seven-passenger SUV, which arrives in North American Mazda dealerships in early 2007, and the brilliantly designed Mazda MX-5 Miata Power Retractable Hard Top.

Maserati Quattroporte

Maserati Quattroporte

Maserati Australia has completed its media and customer launches for the newly launched Quattroporte Automatic with programmes in Sydney and Melbourne, with a significant boost to sales and a warm welcome from the media.
"This is an extremely important model for our markets in Australia and New Zealand," says Edward Butler, General Manager for Maserati in Australia and New Zealand. "With our market predominantly an automatic market, this car will enable us to grow Maserati sales by attracting customers for whom the only blocking point in the past was the gearbox. Indeed, we are seeing DuoSelect sales maintaining existing levels and the majority of automatic sales being people new to Maserati."
For the customer launches, Maserati flew groups of customers by helicopter from the city centres of Melbourne and Sydney to the wine growing areas of the Yarra Valley in the case of Melbourne and for the New South Wales Capital, the Hunter Valley. Here the customers were provided an opportunity to drive the new model of open country roads following a brief presentation.
"This is a much more effective way of getting a feel for the car than driving it around a city centre, especially for customers with a busy schedule that would normally preclude traveling to an out of town venue," explained Mr Butler. "Our drive routes made it clear that the new Quattroporte automatic maintains all the performance and responsiveness of the DuoSelect without any of the negatives traditionally associated with a 'slush-matic' gearbox of the old school. At the same time it is easy and relaxed to drive in traffic. In short: the perfect performance sedan."
The response to Maserati's customer launch was immediate - more than a third of the customers attending the event put their name down for a new Quattroporte Automatic on the spot and Maserati Australia and New Zealand is now negotiating for a significant boost in supply for 2007.
For the media, the programme was modified so that following a detailed technical and market presentation on the Maserati Quattroporte, they drove the cars from the centre of Sydney and Melbourne via 350 km drive routes to and from the respective wine growing area venues.
"With regard to the media we believe that it is very important to give them a solid stint behind the wheel so that they get a real feel for what the Quattroporte can do," says Mr Butler. "So the drive route included rush-hour city centre driving, freeways and a mix of country roads that included very demanding tight and twisty roads, as well as open, sweeping bends, in fact, all the roads that an owner is likely to encounter. In doing so, the media can see what really sets the Quattroporte apart from its rivals."
Clearly the drive route was a success.
One leading journalist commenting after the drive "I am just putting the finishing touches to a feature on the Executive Expresses at the top of the market, to which the Quattroporte was to be just another car in the list alongside the Audi A8, S-Class and the Seven series, but after today my only conclusion has to be if you want a real driver's car, one that sounds, looks and drives the best, then there is only one choice: The Maserati Quattroporte Automatic!"

Kue the brand new Kia concept

Kue the brand new Kia concept

Kia has the whole value thing down pat - now it's going for a little more excitement in its vehicles.
The company unveiled its latest concept vehicle at the 2007 North American International Auto Show, a sporty little thing called the 'Kue'. Kia classifies the Kue as a crossover utility vehicle (CUV) but with an added focus on performance. The company says that though it's 'purely a concept, the Kia Kue does hint at future styling directions for Kia Motors.'
The Kue features a less-is-more look; from the outside, wheels are pushed to the sides under muscular wheel flares with skin tautly stretched over its underpinnings. A single side door opens scissor style for easy ingress and egress.
All four passengers are treated to custom-built bucket seats and everyone will notice a technology-driven interface in front of them while inside the Kue. Touch pad and motion-sensing controls are used to adjust things like audio and climate, and the entire system is programmable so that one surface may activate the stereo for one driver and temperature for another. Rear passengers have their own, separate interface.
The all-wheel drive Kue has the powertrain to justify calling itself a performance vehicle as well, as it's fitted with 400-horsepower, DOHC, supercharged 4.6-liter V8 that produces 400 lb-ft of torque

Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept

Mercedes-Benz Ocean

Look past the Mercedes-Benz Ocean Drive concept's LED head and taillamps and fancy flush doorhandles and you're looking at what a likely S-Class production convertible will look like. Names for the famous strip of road on South beach, the Ocean Drive would fit right in with the beautiful people and the high-end cars known to prowl the area. Based on the V12-powered, long-wheelbase S 600 sedan, the Ocean Drive concept gets an oversized grille (we like) and retains its source car's four-door style. the side glass is frameless, and there are no pillars to interrupt the lines when the car is open to the sky. A traditional, large soft-top protects occupants in sub-optimal weather conditions, and the car features Mercedes' neck-warming technology called AIRSCARF. Nifty indeed. Build it.

Subaru Impreza WRX STI

Subaru Impreza WRX STI
Subaru Leaves the Impreza WRX STI Unchanged for 2007
Subaru has restyled its Impreza line in 2006 and in addition given the all-conquering 293-horsepower WRX STI model several performance enhancements. On the safety front, all Impreza models gained the new dualstage Subaru Advanced Airbag System.Following an interior redesign for 2005, all Impreza models have been restyled in 2006 to reflect the new brand identity and are visually unchanged for 2007. The new Subaru signature front-end design for Impreza features a three-section mesh-type grill inspired by the company’s aircraft heritage, plus boldly styled headlights with smoke-tinted lenses. The 2007 WRX STI is distinguished by the lower-profile hood scoop from the standard WRX to aid forward visibility. Daytime running lights (DRL) are added to the safety roster to make the WRX STI more visible to other drivers. A new roof vane spoiler, inspired by the Impreza World Rally Championship competition car, contributes to stability at track speeds and reinforces the car’s high-performance attitude. The WRX STI received several significant chassis performance enhancements for 2005, including wider wheels. In 2006, the addition of a steering sensor input to the DCCD All-Wheel Drive system enhances power distribution response by more accurately relaying the car’s cornering situation. The WRX STI is based on the Impreza WRX platform but is completely re-engineered to provide even higher levels of acceleration, handling and braking performance that challenge the world’s best sports cars. In its first year, the WRX STI won Road & Track magazine’s “Best Car 2004” Reader’s Choice Award, edging out several dedicated sports cars, including the Porsche 911 GT3.The Impreza WRX STI is powered by a turbocharged and intercooled 2.5-liter DOHC boxer engine producing 293 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 290 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,400 rpm. Teamed exclusively to a 6-speed manual transmission, the engine can propel the WRX STI from zero-to-60 mph in under five seconds. Power is transferred to all four wheels by a sophisticated Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system with Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) to optimize performance in all conditions.

Koenigsegg CCX

Koenigsegg CCX

from Koenigsegg Press Release) The CCX is the latest iteration of the Koenigsegg CC family. The CCX is in many aspects a new car since it has been re-engineered to comply with the US regulation and market demands. Still, it has been a key issue for the Koenigsegg Team to keep the distinctive and record breaking CC shape. We believe it is important to avoid trends and instead hone the aerodynamic shape of the CC range for the future, only enhancing its unique look and appearance with tighter lines and a more aggressive stance. We also believe in continuity. A new Koenigsegg shall show a clear lineage from its predecessor and shall not follow any other design trends – but enhance its already proven concept and shape to perfection. CCX stands for Competition Coupe X. The CCX commemorates the 10th anniversary of the completion and test drive of the first CC maiden prototype, which rolled out from the R&D Department in 1996

Nissan G37 Coupe

While the G37 Coupe has already had an unceremonious debut ahead of its scheduled unveiling at the New York Auto Show next month, Infiniti has seen fit to distribute a press release today (although directed at the UK market) with four more images of the new coupe, as well as every detailed spec you could ask for. What's the new G37's coefficient of drag? 0.29. How big is its fuel tank? 20.0 gallons. How much does it weigh? Well, that depends on the model, of which there are three: the base G37, G37 Journey and G37 Sport 6MT. Like other Infinitis, there will also be three option packages from which to choose: the Premium Package (upgraded Bose stereo, Bluetooth connectivity, heated seats and mirrors, etc.), the Sport Package (19-inch wheels, Viscous Limited-Slip Differential, stiffer suspension, sport brakes, sport seats and an appropriate body kit) and the Navigation Package (touch-screen navigation, 9.3-gigabyte hard drive). There's too much to list here, so you can peruse the press release and a shot of the entire specs list after the jump. The gallery has also been updated with high-res, desktop wallpaper-sized versions of the new pics.

Toyota Land Cruiser

Toyota Land Cruiser

The launch of the new Toyota Land Cruiser is a highly significant event for Toyota in Europe. The Land Cruiser name is synonymous with Toyota values worldwide – indeed Land Cruiser is almost as old as Toyota itself.
The new Toyota Land Cruiser embodies all the rugged characteristics and off-road reliability that have made the range famous, but adds a new dimension of driving pleasure, perceived quality and comfort. As a result, the new Toyota Land Cruiser can take its place as a worthy successor to the generations which have gone before. It is equally at home on- and off-road to satisfy the new market created by current generation SUV drivers – new, demanding customers who want style, passenger car on-road dynamics and tough, off-road capability. However, the new Toyota Land Cruiser is no ‘soft’ 4x4. It retains the genetics that made Land Cruiser the toughest off-roader in the market and that can be identified by the traditional frame chassis and separate body construction for maximum rigidity and strength.
Most powerful Land Cruiser ever
The new Toyota Land Cruiser will be available with a choice of engines, both of which balance power and economy to create the most efficient power plants in their class: the latest development of the existing 3.0- litre, four cylinder, D-4D common rail turbo diesel or an all-new 4.0-litre V6 petrol – the most powerful engine ever installed in a Land Cruiser.
The advanced D-4D common rail diesel develops 120 kW (163 DIN hp) at 3,400 rpm and has massive torque of 343Nm across an engine speed range of 1,600 to 3,200rpm. This superb low-end torque availability is a record value in the segment and is best suited for off-road or towing activities. On the road, it comfortably reaches a maximum speed of 165 km/h (manual) and accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 12.7 seconds.
The all-new V6 petrol engine gives the new Land Cruiser premium passenger car performance with a 0- 100km/h acceleration in 9.5 seconds. This lightweightalloy V6 develops 183 kW (249 DIN hp) at 5,200rpm and has 380 Nm of torque at 3,800rpm.

Maybach

2005 Frankfurt Auto Show Introduces New Maybach 57 S

The upcoming 2005 International Auto Show in Frankfurt marks the sales launch of the latest addition to the Maybach model lineup: the newly developed 57 Special. This new sedan responds to the wishes of demanding customers for even greater engine output and agility. In order to meet their requirements, its 6-litre V-12 biturbo engine has been enhanced by Mercedes-AMG to develop 600 hp. It also features a firmer suspension setup to ensure that it will be able to transfer this formidable power to the road surefootedly without compromising the high level of ride comfort that is one of the hallmarks of the Maybach luxury saloons. This combination promises to make the Maybach 57 S the ideal high-end luxury sedan for enthusiastic drivers seeking the very latest high-performance technology implemented in a manner that embodies the perfection characteristic of the brand. The 0-62-mph acceleration time of just five seconds provides proof of the outstanding performance promised by the new Maybach 57 S. The new Maybach 57 S will be among in the luxury brand's offerings in Sindelfingen beginning in November 2005.
Visual highlights add emphasis to the distinctly dynamic character of this powerful luxury sedan. They include an exclusive monochrome color scheme featuring special black or silver paint finishes, a modified front section with an enhanced radiator grille and revised light units, a discreet "57 S" legend on the front wing below the A-pillar and on the trunk, as well as striking new 20-inch spoked wheels.

The highly distinctive and exclusive tone is maintained inside the vehicle as well, where a carefully balanced combination of piano lacquer and carbon elements -- especially in the areas within the driver's reach and immediate field of view -- create an atmosphere of dynamic elegance.
The Maybach high-end luxury saloons at the Frankfurt Motor Show also illustrate the exceptional scope for individualisation offered by the brand. One example on show is a Maybach 57, for which the specialists at the manufacturer have developed a paint finish identical to that of the Maybach "Zeppelin" model of 1933. And the similarities don't end there: although the two vehicles were manufactured almost 75 years apart, they share not only the same paint finish, but also the same interior appointments and even the same chassis number. Moreover, they belong to the same owner!

Maybach is also passionately committed to meeting even the most unusual customer requests with outstanding craftsmanship and painstaking attention to detail. This is reflected in features such as trim elements finished in gold and precious stones, gold keys, family coats of arms, and various forms of intricate inlay work. An extreme example of Maybach's personal individualization will be demonstrated at the show by the exciting Exelero Sports Coupe: Built as a one-off, this model, which was commissioned by the tire manufacturer Fulda, is capable of speeds in excess of 217 mph.
Watch for Motor Trend's coverage of the 61st Frankfurt Motor Show to begin later this week, here at motortrend.com.

Engine(s)
2.8 L twin-turbocharged V6
Saab Aero-X is a concept car by Saab unveiled at the 2006 Salon International de l'Auto. It is powered by a 2.8 L twin-turbocharged V6 running on pure ethanol that produces 400 hp. 0 to 62 mph is predicted to be 4.9 s and top speed is limited to 250 km/h (155 mph). It has a 7-speed automatic transmission controlled by paddles on the steering wheel.
Like the American-market Saab 9-2X, the Aero-X has four wheel drive. The doors and windscreen are connected, so instead of using conventional doors or even gullwing doors, it uses a cockpit canopy where the entire top section of the car is opened. This offered the Aero X's driver full 180 degree vision, and also facilitates entry and exit from its low-slung cabin. The body is made in carbon fiber. The suspension is electronically-controlled. Even if it is a compact two-seat sports car, it has reasonable storage, as the rear features two storage facilities, with a conventional hatchback and sliding drawer underneath.
The interior offers "clean Scandinavian interior design". The car has no ordinary dials and buttons; instead, data is displayed on acrylic 'clear zones' in graphic 3D images. All interior and exterior lights are done using LEDs.
It is a concept car, but if it is well received, it may go into production, probably based on a shortened Epsilon 2 platform.
"This study shows how the strength of the Saab brand heritage can inspire bold, innovative design," said Bryan Nesbit, the Executive Director of GM Design Europe. "As we move forward with new Saab product, we will remain focused on carefully cultivating this brand equity in the context of Scandinavian design values."
"This concept shows the exciting possibilities that are open to us as we evolve a more progressive design language for the Saab brand," says Jan Åke Jonsson, Saab's Managing Director. "Our designers, engineers and marketers in Sweden are ideally placed to nurture and communicate the unique DNA of the Saab brand. Their work will ensure that future product proposals express core qualities, such as progressive design, sporty performance and emotional functionality, in a way that is specific to Saab."

Ford Mustang Giugiaro

Ford Mustang Giugiaro

For the 2006 LA Auto Show Italian design house Italdesign, led by Fabrizio Giugiaro (Giorgetto Giugairo's son - see Ferrari GG50 concept), decided to reinterpret the contemporary Ford Mustang. In 2005 Guigiaro had approached J Mays, Ford Motor Company's group vice president, Design and chief creative officer, with the idea to create an American icon with Italian flair powered by Ford Racing products. It took just 4 months to create an exterior model of the Guigiaro Mustang in the Turin, Italy, based studio. The Ford Mustang by Giugiaro appears to be more compact than the standard production car, thanks to a reduction of the rear overhang and the signature Giugiaro style of tapering the angles on the car to the limit of its mechanical outlines. The Giugiaro styled Mustang is 30 millimeters longer in the nose, and wider by a full 80 millimeters in the rear.Ford Racing improved the Guigiaro Mustang's all-aluminum 4.6-liter 3-valve V-8 engine by adding an intercooled twin-screw supercharger, fuel injectors from the Ford GT and a unique engine calibration. Engine air intake was increased with a larger 95 mm mass air meter and a conical air filter. Exhaust performance of the Guigiaro Mustang was enhanced with new Ford Racing mufflers and an X-pipe. The upgrades allow for an estimated 500 horsepower at a boost level of 11 psi from the Ford Racing supercharger. To keep the Guigiaro Ford Mustang handling as good as it looks, the FR500C-inspired chassis tuning is accomplished with a tailored Ford Racing Handling Pack. This package, available through Ford Racing for the Mustang GT, adds new Dynamic-tuned dampers, lowering springs and anti-sway bars. The changes give the car a lower stance while sharpening handling response. The car rides approximately 1.5 inches lower than the production Mustang GT. Features of the Ford Mustang Concept by Guigiaro:• The interior – featuring a dramatic instrument panel that sweeps the width of the car; circular gauges that project from behind the steering wheel; dark brown horsehide-covered headrests with horse logo accents; and seat cushions and backrests elaborately upholstered in dark brown mottled horse hides.• The single curved glass panel that bridges the windshield and rear window, serving as the concept's roof. Produced by Solutia of Detroit, the panel is made from a special type of crystal that filters out 100 percent of UVA rays while providing unfettered vista views.• Doors hinged at the base of the upright A-pillar and open vertically at the touch of a button.• Bespoke taillights, which are three separate elements as found on the 1964 Mustang – but reinterpreted into a more dramatic arrow shape that links to the louver panels that replace the rear side windows.• The visible curl that sweeps into the crest of the concept's carbon fiber fenders, hinting at tail fins that defined American cars of the '50s.• The sporting-but-elegant unique 20-inch rims, fitted with 275/40 tires on the front and larger 315/35 tires on the rear.

Dodge Challenger

2008 Dodge Challenger 392 Super Stock Concept
At this year's SEMA auto show Chrysler released another 2008 Challenger concept car. Introducing the Dodge Challenger 392 Super Stock concept car. This car features the rebith of the legendary 392 Hemi. This new engine sports between 525hp and 540hp! The Challenger SS concept sports a tritone paint job. It has white as the base paint. Then the top half of the Challenger is a bright blue. Finially it sports a stripe down the side of the car that resembles the 1970 T/A Challenger's stripe or the 1971 Dodge Challenger's R/T stripe. Without the "R/T" and "T/A" lettering though.
The 392 Dodge Challenger also shows some cosmetic changes from the original 2008 Dodge Challenger concept. The front bumper is pushed out a little farther, probably to help with crash safety tests. Also the fog lights have changed to a more practiacal production version.
So will we see the new Challenger equipped with the 392 Hemi? Well with the competing 500hp Ford Mustang and the new Camaro coming out, I can't see how Dodge could afford not to. For the new Challenger to compete they need more than just awesome cosmetics. They need to excel in performance, too. Even more important then performance, though, will be the price that they set. And if they offer a V6 version to get the car into main circulation.
2008 Dodge Challenger Overview
The 2008 Dodge Challenger will be based on the LY Platform (the updated version of the LX platform). It will share the updated LY platform with the Dodge Charger, Chrysler 300 and the Magnum. The new platform will be able to hold a manual transmission along with an automatic transmission. The Dodge Challenger will be rear wheel drive, and have what everyone wanted, two doors. The expected starting price on the 2008 Dodge Challenger will be around $31,000.

For more pictures view our Dodge Challenger Forum !
2008 Dodge Challenger Engine Options
What engines will there be available in the 2008 Dodge Challenger? We don't know for sure right now, but there will definitely be a Hemi available. Like the Dodge Charger I think the top engine will be the 6.1 Hemi which produces 425 HP. There has been some rumors though of them using the new 392 Hemi. There will likely be a V6 engine available also. It is now looking as though there isn't going to be a V6 Challenger in 2008. The current prospect looks as though the stock engine for the Challenger will be the 5.7L Hemi. Then the SRT-8 version would have the 6.1L engine.
The Dodge Challenger concept made its debut at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show, which was back in January of 2006, and has made several appearances at other car shows and meets.
Will they bring back the different versions like the R/T, SE, and T/A for the 2008 Dodge Challenger? They will almost for surely bring back the R/T and SE versions. For the T/A version, we don't know yet, but the Charger had the Daytona edition so along the same lines they could bring it back. They will also likely have the SRT version available too.

2008 Honda Accord Coupe

2008 Honda Accord Coupe Caught Prior to Fall Debut

Snowy spring roads rarely make for compelling video footage, but when several prototypes of the 2008 Honda Accord coupe showed, the occasion presented our spy photographers with plenty of interesting subject matter. Dressed only in light camouflage, these Accord coupe prototypes weren't far from the production models that will arrive later this year. Thanks to the minimal disguise, it's easy to see that these prototypes have roughly the same overall size and shape as the Accord concept coupe shown at the 2007 Detroit Auto Show. Up front, the airdam has a particularly aggressive shape for a Honda. It has a more squared-off shape than before and flares out slightly at each corner. The center intake remains substantial, although much the same size as before, and there are decent-size openings for a pair of useful foglights.Compared to the current model, the new Accord coupe's most distinctive design cue up front is its trapezoidal grille. Acura has been using this look recently, so maybe it's not surprising to see it migrate over to the Honda side. These test prototypes also reveal a new character line that runs from the front wheel arch all the way to the taillights. It breaks up the slab-sided look of the current coupe without being too obvious at first glance. The rear-end styling isn't drastically different from the current car, apart from the less triangular taillights and more steeply angled tail section. In traditional Honda fashion, the engines for the Accord coupe will produce more power while emitting less pollutants and using less gas. An enhanced version of Honda's VTEC valve-timing system aided by cylinder activation is expected to give V6 models as much as 270 horsepower, while four-cylinder models will get only minor changes. No word yet about whether Honda plans to continue with a manual transmission for this car. With sales expected to start this fall, official specifications and photos should arrive by the end of the summer.

MINI Cooper D

MINI Cooper D

May 31, 2007 MINI hatch models are to receive technological revisions later this year, resulting in jaw-dropping performance and efficiency figures. The MINI Cooper D will be capable of returning an astonishing 72.4mpg, with CO2 emissions of just 104 g/km, thanks to regenerative braking, auto Start-Stop functionality and a Switch Point Display – all of which will come at no extra cost.
When production of the revised models begins in August 2007, there will be no requirement for alternative fuel sources or hybrid technology to achieve these stunning stats. All model variants will instead be supplied as standard with high-tech engine tweaks, providing exceptional economy and minimal emissions without compromising the MINI driving experience.
Brake Energy Regeneration works by using an Intelligent Alternator Control (IAC) and an Absorbent Glass Mat battery to recycle previously lost energy, which saves fuel. The IAC reduces drag on the engine by only engaging when required to charge the battery, whereas a traditional alternator is always pulling power from the engine. Additionally, the energy generated by the engine on over-run (under braking or descending a hill) was previously wasted. Now this lost energy is utilised by the IAC to charge the battery.
The Auto Start-Stop Function, available with manual transmission cars, automatically switches the engine off when the vehicle is stationary and the driver puts the car into neutral. To restart the driver only need engage the clutch again before pulling away in the normal manner. The system may be de-activated at the touch of a button when not required.
Switch Point Display aids drivers of manual transmission MINIs in selecting the most economical gear in which to drive. The engine management system analyses speed, road situation and accelerator pedal position and based on this data calculates optimum gearing. The ideal gear is then displayed by number in the cockpit display.
Even without these technology advancements in place, MINI leads the new car market for year-on-year improvements in clean engine manufacturing. C02 output per car has been reduced in the last year by an impressive 14 per cent. Putting that into perspective, the industry average was recorded at a lowly 0.3 per cent.

Nissan Navara

Nissan Navara King Cab Pick Up TestSat, 8 Oct 2005

Saturday 8th October 2005The new 174PS Nissan Navara is currently king of the pick-ups. Not only will it carry more than a ton, it will also cruise at more than a ton and for that it deserves the Respect shown in its TV commercials.Compared to the average car, and previous generation pick-ups, it’s a big vehicle, longer than the average parking space. Sitting high on 17” wheels with chunky 255/65 R17 Goodyear Wrangler tyres, getting in means a climb. But the neatly minimalist dash, the multifunction steering wheel, even the ‘Birdview’ satnav are all familiar Pathfinder kit, which is hardly surprising as the two vehicles were developed side by side on the same ladderframe chassis.Same long-reach, floppy gearshift, too, which quickly becomes acceptably precise once you get used to it. Performance is slightly better, with 60 reached in 10.5 seconds rather than the 11.2 of the heavier Pathfinder, and a (conservatively estimated) top speed of 105mph. Two aspects that aren’t the same, though, are the handling and the ride comfort.Instead of a coil sprung rear axle, the Navara’s finned diff is suspended on a pair of cart springs in the time-honoured manner of Constable’s ‘Haywain’. It has to be, so the large 1,861mm by 1,560mm load deck can carry 1,085kg and company drivers temporarily get away with BIK tax on just £500 a year. But those springs make it very stiff and bouncy at the back and apt to lift and spin a rear wheel if you start being silly. You can counter this to some extent by shifting into 4x4H mode, which you can do on the fly using a dash-mounted knob. But, unless conditions are really bad, the extra wear and fuel consumption mitigate against this, so, like me, you will simply adapt your driving to the vehicle in two-wheel drive. Once you get with it you find you can actually hustle the truck through corners quite quickly, but you have to keep reminding yourself of the consequences of making a mistake with such a big, heavy vehicle. On the motorway it’s a surprisingly good cruiser. 6th gear offers 30 miles for every 1,000rpm and the steering wheel mounted cruise-control keeps it to the selected speed very accurately. It isn’t as quiet as a good car, obviously. But it’s quiet for a truck. The latest generation Birdview DVD satnav loses out in not being touch-screen. But it warns of traffic jams both on your route and in the vicinity of your route. And very neatly switches to a detailed close-up of any junction you approach with precise instructions where to go, better even than those in the new £100,000 Mercedes S600.The King Cab offers pillarless double-opening side doors. Like the Ford Ranger, Mazda B Series and RX8, and the massive Nissan Titan pick up, the rear side doors are rear hinged, which is very handy indeed. In the back there are a pair of small, folding jump seats with seatbelts but I would not recommend these for journeys of more than 10 miles. The space is best used for secure storage of tools and kit rather than people. If you need to regularly carry four or five, then sensible to sacrifice 350mm of load length and go for the double cab. This has comfortable rear seats with angled backrests and decent legroom. And, if you want to use the back of the cab for tools rather than people, you can still flip the seat squabs up.Rather than ship its new L200 Triton from Thailand with its 162bhp 3.2, Mitsubishi will be offering a 160bhp power upgrade of its 136bhp 2.5. Isuzu has a new 145bhp 3.0 I-TECH diesel for its D-Max and a 155bhp Prodrive upgrade for its older 130bhp 3.0 diesel. And there are rumours that Toyota will eventually bring in the 164bhp 3.0 D-4D for the new HiLux to supplement its standard rather weak 102bhp 2.5 D-4D. Yet Nissan still manages to outpower them all with its 172bhp Navara. And that makes the Navara undisputed king of the hill.

Mitsubishi EvoMitsubishi boxes clever on new Evo

Mitsubishi EvoMitsubishi boxes clever on new Evo
The Evo X is gearing up for production with one of the world’s most extreme transmissions, we can reveal

The new high-performance Mitsubishi, which is scheduled to appear in the firm’s UK showrooms early next year, will be offered with the option of a conventional five-speed manual gearbox or a brand new two-pedal clutchless set-up.Bosses in Britain are expecting a huge 80 per cent of Evo X models to be specified with the paddleshift box, which operates in three modes. Although drivers always have manual control, they can choose from Normal, Sport and – most severe of all – Supersport settings. The final mode has been designed for use on trackdays, allowing changes to higher gears only when they are absolutely necessary to keep the revs near the red line at all times.Standard Evo X models will be more expensive than the outgoing IX, with entry-level 300bhp variants costing more than £30,000. UK-tuned FQ versions won’t be added to the line-up until early 2009. For anyone who can’t stretch to the Evo’s price and running costs, a 260bhp Ralliart-badged five-door Lancer will be offered for less than £25,000. Meanwhile, bosses have also pledged their intent to bring the electric-powered Mitsubishi i to UK dealers as soon as possible. The plug-in city car won’t be produced until 2010, when it joins the petrol variant, on sale next month.

BMW M5

BMW M5
UK sales start in spring 2005
BMW Great Britain has announced first details of the forthcoming BMW M5. Faithfully resembling the "Concept" M5 revealed at the Geneva Motorshow in March 2004, the fourth generation of fat man's express will be the most powerful BMW road car ever built, generating 507bhp and surpassing the magical 100bhp per litre mark.

Translating BMW’s Formula 1 experience directly into a road car, the new BMW M5 is powered by a normally aspirated five-litre V10 engine – a first for BMW – with the two five-cylinder banks arranged at a 90-degree angle. Redlined at 8,250rpm, the 507bhp and 520Nm of torque propels the car from zero to 62mph in 4.7seconds and to 124mph in 15 seconds before reaching an electronically limited top speed of 155mph.
Without the limiter, the new M5 would be capable of an lentalist angering 205mph. These levels of performance, when combined with the lightweight aluminium chassis and body panels from the 5 Series, ensure the new M5 can lap the infamous ‘Nordschleife’ at the Nürburgring in approximately eight minutes – rather quick!
The new BMW M5 produces over 25 per cent more power than the outgoing M5 that itself set the benchmark as the ultimate sports saloon. This is made possible, in part, by the bi-VANOS variable valve timing and individual throttle butterflies fitted to the new car. Ensuring an optimum charge from every combustion cycle these features increase performance, flexibility and responsiveness, offer inspired fuel consumption and emissions figures and ensure the car exceeds EU4 standards.

Power is transmitted through the world’s first production car seven-speed sequential gearbox with Drivelogic, changing gears 20 per cent faster than the previous generation SMG transmission. The gearbox offers a bewildering eleven different change patterns, six of which allow the drive to vary the speed and response of gear change in the manual selection mode and five in the automatic mode. The sixth pattern in manual is reserved for the Launch Control function, giving the driver the fastest possible acceleration from standstill.
The new M5 also features a new DSC traction control system specifically developed for the car. But by pressing the DSC button once the car reverts to M Dynamic Mode to allow an enthusiastic driver the ability to push the M5 to the absolute limits of traction, even permitting some sideslip and countersteering. If the DSC button is pressed again and held down DSC is completely disengaged.
Assisting further with performance the BMW M5 also comes with an MDrive button on the steering wheel, offering a one-touch function that changes the settings on the car to an enhanced sporting character. This set-up is formatted via iDrive with the owner choosing the preferred SMG, Electronic Damper Control and DSC modes and, if specified, the rate of support the Active Seat Control side bolsters offer! Once programmed, the driver just presses the MDrive button on the steering wheel to transform the character of the M5.
The function of the standard fit Head-up Display is also altered when the MDrive button is activated. The default setting sees speed, navigation instructions, check control messages and cruise control settings projected onto the windscreen in the driver’s line of sight. However, if MDrive is activated the display changes to a rev counter including vehicle speed that both flash at the driver when the next gear needs to be selected.
While the chassis, suspension and steering of the M5 are based on the design of the 5 Series, almost all components are new. The M5 also features a variable M differential lock that offers a high level of driving stability and traction, especially when accelerating out of high-speed corners. Stopping power in the M5 is also enhanced courtesy of a high performance braking system with cross-drilled ventilated discs and twin-piston callipers. This braking system, in combination with the lightweight materials incorporated in the 1,755kgs car, ensures that the M5 decelerates from 62mph to zero in just 36 metres or 124mph to zero is reached in 140 metres.
Visually, the new M5 takes the distinctive looks of the 5 Series to another level, with modified front and rear aprons and side sills. For the first time on an M5, the front wings now incorporate an air duct, which helps keep the engine bay cool during operation, and a new door mirror design. Wider wheelarches house the exclusive 19-inch M5 wheel design while BMW M’s signature four tailpipes are the last thing many drivers will see as they're left in the M5's wake.
The BMW M5 will be launched in Europe in January 2005, while deliveries of right-hand-drive models in the UK start in spring 2005.

zap-x electric

zap-x electric

February 2, 2007 In a marriage seemingly well matched, electric automobile pioneer ZAP has chosen Lotus Engineering’s platform and body structure design as the basis for the development of the high performance electric ZAP-X. The car is based on the advanced APX (Aluminium Performance Crossover ) concept car and will be shown for the first time at the North American Dealers Association (NADA) exhibition which opens tomorrow (February 3). A combination of the lightweight aluminium vehicle architecture, a new efficient drive and advanced battery management systems is intended to enable a range of up to 350 miles between charges, with a rapid 10-minute recharging time. An auxiliary power unit is planned to support longer distance journeys. The good news for sports enthusiasts is the performance courtesy of a killer power-to- weight ratio. - four in-hub electric motors, deliver 161 bhp apiece, which add together for 644 horsepower in all wheel drive mode, and capable of powering the ZAP-X to a top speed of 155mph.
Steve Schneider, CEO of ZAP, said: “Lotus Engineering's APX technology demonstrator vehicle is a perfect fit for our plans to introduce a full product portfolio of electric cars. Due to the initial design by Lotus, our cost and time to production will be significantly reduced. We believe that the ZAP-X will become the most advanced, most practical and most appealing flagship electric vehicle to date and will revolutionize the industry providing the driver with the enjoyment of a sports car and the practicality of an SUV.”
Mike Kimberley, CEO of Group Lotus plc, said: “Lotus Engineering’s APX is a world-class innovative concept and was developed to showcase real solutions to new challenges facing the automotive industry. So it’s very satisfying that ZAP’s proposed new model will make use of a great deal of the APX concept’s advanced body structure and chassis technology. The bringing together of these next-generation vehicle technologies represents another significant step forward for automotive technology.”
The APX showcases Lotus Engineering’s Versatile Vehicle Architecture technology, combining lightweight aluminium vehicle architecture with exceptionally strong and stiff structural rigidity, as well as lower manufacturing investment requirements. Having first been shown to the world at the Geneva motor show in 2006, the APX concept has won the 2006 European Aluminium Awards in the “Transport and Automotive” category.
The innovative placement of the power train leaves the space previously occupied by the conventional engine and drive train for additional battery capacity and amenities, making it a very consumer-oriented electric car concept. These design features will give the ZAP-X crossover the structural strength, and potentially storage and range that no electric vehicle has yet achieved publicly.
The development programme is proposed to be managed from a new centre of excellence for research and development of environmentally-friendly vehicle designs and technologies.
Engineering input will come from Lotus Engineering Inc, and the British technology consultancy’s other R&D centres in the UK, Malaysia and China.

Ford Edge "Plug In" Fuel Cell Vehicle shown in Canada for first time

Ford Edge "Plug In" Fuel Cell Vehicle shown in Canada for first time

The Ford Edge with HySeries Drive, the world’s first drivable fuel cell hybrid electric vehicle, hit the streets of Canada for the first time in Vancouver Wednesday as part of a trip to showcase the advanced research vehicle alongside its most technologically advanced production vehicle, the new hot-selling 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid. The Ford Edge with HySeries Drive combines an onboard hydrogen fuel cell generator with lithium-ion batteries to deliver a combined city/highway gasoline equivalent fuel economy rating of 5.9 L/100km (41 mpg) with zero emissions. For those who drive less than 80 km (50 miles) each day, the average jumps to more than 3.0L /100 km (80 mpg). It is built on a flexible powertrain architecture that will enable Ford to use new fuel and propulsion technologies as they develop without redesigning the vehicle. The new HySeries Drive™ powertrain featured in a Ford Edge uses a real-world version of the powerplant envisioned in the Ford Airstream concept unveiled in January at the 2007 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. In late January, the Edge with HySeries Drive hit the road and has accumulated more than 8000 real-world km (5000 miles). The plug-in hybrid is powered by a 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack at all times. The vehicle drives the first 40 km (25 miles) each day on stored electricity alone, after which the fuel cell begins operating to keep the battery pack charged. This provides another 320 km (200 miles) of range for a total of 360 km (225 miles) with zero emissions. Individual experiences will vary widely and can stretch out the time between fill-ups to more than 640 km (400 miles): drivers with modest daily needs would need to refuel only rarely, drivers who travel less than 80 km (50 miles) each day will see fuel economy well over 3.0 L /100 km (80 mpg), while those with long daily commutes will see somewhat lower numbers as the fuel cell must run a larger fraction of the time. The Ford Edge with HySeries Drive can travel at speeds of up to 136 km/h (85 mph). An on-board charger (110/220 VAC) can refresh the battery pack when a standard home outlet is available, making the concept a true plug-in hybrid. When the battery pack is depleted to approximately 40 percent, the hydrogen fuel cell – supplied by Ford partner Ballard – automatically turns on and begins generating electricity to recharge the batteries. Like a conventional automobile, the Ford Edge with HySeries Drive will go until it runs out of fuel – in this case via a 350-bar hydrogen tank that supplies 4.5 kg of useable hydrogen. The HySeries Drive name is derived from the powertrain’s structure: a hydrogen fuel-cell-powered series hybrid drivetrain. This highly innovative approach reduces the size, weight, cost and complexity of a conventional fuel cell system by more than 50 percent. It also promises to more than double the lifetime of the fuel cell stack. This flexible powertrain architecture enables the use of new fuel and propulsion technologies as they develop and become available without the need to redesign the vehicle and its control systems.Certainly, many significant technical hurdles need to be overcome before a vehicle such as the Edge with HySeries Drive can become a reality. Fuel cell vehicles remain expensive, costing millions of dollars each. And the single biggest hurdle to plug-ins remains the cost of lithium-ion batteries. Much work also needs to be done to make fuel cells more durable and to create a hydrogen infrastructure.

New Porsche 911 Cabriolet

New Porsche 911 Cabriolet
Porsche will be sending the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet to the starting line on September 8. The 20-year tradition within the 911 Series of the 911 Turbo with a classic soft top is continued with this open, top model. Firstly, the open 2+2 seater offers the driving performance of a high-performance sports car while still providing convertible driving pleasure. Secondly, compared to the competition the 911 Turbo Cabriolet is economical in its fuel consumption, thanks to its deliberate design, outstanding aerodynamics and advanced engine technology As with the 911 Turbo Coupé, the Cabriolet will also be powered by a 3.6 liter six-cylinder ‘boxer’ engine with biturbo turbocharging and Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG). The powerplant already generates 480 hp (353 kW) and 620 Nm of torque at 1950 rpm. With the new, optional “Sport Chrono Turbo Package”, which includes an overboost function, up to 680 Nm is even intermittently possible. The manual transmission version can accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just four seconds. With Tiptronic S the time can be cut to 3.8 seconds. Both versions can reach speeds of up to 310 km/h. Fuel consumption for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet is 12.9 liters per 100 kilometers – an exemplary value in the competitive environment. In spite of the convertible-specific reinforcement of the chassis and automatic and the extendable rollover protection behind the rear seats, the open version of the 911 Turbo only weighs 70 kilos more than the Coupé. The light, three-layer soft top, which can completely automatically be opened or closed in roughly 20 seconds, enables a low balance point. Together with the running gear that is tuned to convertible-specific needs, which includes the active suspension system Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard equipment, the new 911 Turbo Cabriolet offers the sporting driving performance typical for a Porsche 911 as well as extremely high driving safety together with appealing driving characteristics. The driving stability control Porsche Stability Management (PSM) and the managed all-wheel drive Porsche Traction Management (PTM) also contribute to its uncommon performance. The system with an electronically controlled multi-plate clutch can, according to the requirements, alternatively shift the drive output from the engine between the front and rear axles, and – with shift intervals of a maximum of 100 milliseconds – quicker than the reaction of the engine to load changes. With a drag coefficient of Cw=0.31, the 911 Turbo Cabriolet travels at the level of the coupé models. Together with the rear spoiler, which automatically extends at speeds from 120 km/h – extending 30 mm further than with the Coupé, the vehicle is the only standard series convertible that generates negative lift at the rear axle. Along with its passive safety systems, including six airbags as standard equipment and the comprehensive rollover protection system – with steel tubing integrated into the windshield frame and an extendable rollover protection behind the rear seats – the 911 Turbo Cabriolet also fulfils all legal requirements for passive safety applicable in the worldwide sales markets. Furthermore, it is equipped with one the most high-performance brake systems. The six-cylinder fixed-brake caliper up front stems from the Porsche Carrera GT. Upon request, the race-proven and light Porsche Ceramic Composite Brake (PCCB) ceramic brake system is also available for the 911 Turbo Cabriolet. Also included in the extensive standard series equipment of the 911 Turbo Cabriolet are Bi-Xenon headlights, 19 inch forged wheels with two-tone appearance, an air conditioner, the wind deflector, the Porsche Communication Management (PCM) – with the navigation module and 5.8 inch color monitor and the Bose Surround Sound System, among other things
